Local SEO Checklist for Durango and Four Corners Businesses

By Zack Esgar · Published

When someone in Durango searches for “plumber near me” or “best breakfast downtown Durango,” Google shows a map with three businesses before any regular results. That map pack gets a large share of the clicks. AI assistants increasingly answer the same questions directly. This checklist covers the fundamentals that influence both.

1. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile

Your Google Business Profile is the single most important local SEO asset.

  • Choose the most specific primary category that describes your business, then add relevant secondary categories.
  • Add your services, service areas, hours (including holiday and seasonal hours), photos and a clear description.
  • If you serve customers at their location and don’t have a storefront, set up a service-area business and hide your address.
  • Post updates, offers and events regularly.

Also claim Bing Places and Apple Business Connect. Many iPhone users find local businesses through Apple Maps, and some AI assistants draw on Bing’s data.

2. Keep your name, address and phone consistent everywhere

Search engines cross-check your business information across the web. Make sure your name, address and phone number (NAP) are identical on your website, Google, Bing, Apple, Yelp, Facebook, the Durango Chamber of Commerce and industry directories. Inconsistent details confuse search engines and AI systems.

3. Build helpful pages for each service

Create a dedicated page for each core service you offer, rather than listing everything on one page. Each page should explain what the service is, who it is for, what it costs or how pricing works, and answer common questions. This helps you rank for specific searches and gives AI systems clear answers to cite.

If you serve several towns, such as Bayfield, Cortez or Pagosa Springs, create location pages only when you can include genuinely useful, unique local information.

4. Add LocalBusiness structured data

Structured data is code (schema.org markup) that tells search engines exactly what your business is, where it operates, your hours and how to contact you. Add LocalBusiness markup to your website and make sure it matches your Google Business Profile.

5. Earn and respond to reviews

Reviews influence both rankings and customer decisions.

  • Ask happy customers for reviews with a direct link. A simple follow-up email or text works well.
  • Respond to every review, positive or negative, politely and promptly.
  • Never buy reviews or offer incentives for positive reviews. It violates Google policy and FTC rules.

6. Make your website fast and mobile-friendly

Many local searches happen on phones, and mountain-town cell signals can be slow. A fast, mobile-friendly site keeps visitors from leaving. Check your site with Google PageSpeed Insights and aim to pass Core Web Vitals.

Links from local organizations signal that you are part of the community. Sponsor a local event, join the chamber of commerce, partner with complementary businesses, or get featured in local news.

AI tools like Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity summarize information from across the web. To be included:

  • Write clear, direct answers to common customer questions on your site.
  • Keep your business details consistent across every listing.
  • Use structured data and keep your content current.
